Some people are afraid of driving, or consider it a n uisance. This must be how they think.

Kinja'd!!!

On a related note I recently went on a work trip and we carpooled in a minivan. Of the 7 co-workers that came two of use were me , 5 were middle aged, to older midwestern woman . 3 of these grown ass people had to driven to the meet up location because it was dark and foggy and they couldn’t handle driving in those conditions.

How, how do get to be an adult and still think like that?

They weren’t carpooling. They woke up their significant other to drive them to work at 4:30 am because conditions weren’t ideal . Then we all carpooled 4 hours away. And they made me drive.

Some people thankfully are aware of their limitations such as driving in fog or at night where they can’t see as well as they can under clear sunny conditions, I’m thankful these people get lifts or car share. The dangerous ones are the ones that either aren’t aware and drive dangerously or are aware and risk it.

even I consider most of my driving a nuisance, because it’s a morass of crawling through backed up interstates (or diverting through the more “picturesque” Detroit neighborhoods, trying not to get clipped by a red light runner.)

One of my dearest memories is one time when I was delivering pizza on a twisty lake road, in late April. Mind you that’s Late April in northern Wi so it might as well have been February. The road was icy an trash. I don’t know the road we’ll. I came over a hill and saw a tight right hand  corner. Tried to hit the brakes and they just locked up. I knew I couldn’t slow down so I trew the car sideways, and hit the trottle praying my front tires could claw their way out of the corner.

I saw a telephone pole, I felt my rear tire drop off the far side of the road, and the car just pulled out of the corner. I delivered the pizza, and on the way back I looked at the tracks to see that my rear tires came about 6 inches from that pole. Best rush ever .

Kinja'd!!!3

There are some situations where a person can drive, and is not necessarily afraid of it, but is reluctant to do so under dark or foggy conditions.

My mother in law was never a car enthusiast. She learned to drive to get places. She actually owned a beige Camry and liked it. Unfortunately, she developed a pituitary tumor that impinged on her vision, and especially her night vision over time. She learned to not drive at night. Today, that tumor is gone. She found out why her vision was getting bad and took care of it. She can drive without limitations again. Still doesn’t enjoy it.

My wife’s night vision has begun to go bad over the last several years, likely as a part of her overall medical problems, but also just because she just always had bad eyesight and it gets worse with age. She doesn’t enjoy driving at night because the glare from oncoming cars bothers her. She can do it safely, but it’s not fun for her. When we go out at night, she prefers to have me drive.

Now, people who are just afraid of driving on principle, I don’t understand. To me, that’s letting fear rule your life, and that’s not a good way to live.

This is a good point. I’m too old to be inconsiderate of people’s physical  limitations. It’s easy to take that for granted.

They’re not wrong. I feel like most people who drive, simply delude themselves into believing it is not the single most dangerous situation they will be in all day. It’s pretty easy to forget how dangerous it is, when you’re eating, have the radio on, and texting.

Als this is one reason I married my wife. The girl before her was the over cautious, self doubting “I can’t do that” kind of person.

Lu wife on the other hand was all for driving through a bloats to see me when we were dating, and willing to drive her dad’s. Excursion with a trailer on the back so I could move when we got married. And we lived 2 hours apart. That kind of “i can do it” attitude impressed the fuck out of me

Yeah, I’m on both sides of this. I have terrible depth perception thanks to some shitty optometrists as a kid (and genetics). I don’t mind night driving but I definitely change some things  to accommodate it - unprotected lefts are a lot harder, for example. On the other hand, no one driving the night shift for Le Mans is going to say it’s easy-peasy either.

Yeah, I’m not gonna lie, towing a trailer in a giant vehicle scares the bejesus out of me but as long as no one is sitting in the passenger seat being mean about it I could figure it out if needed.

But like... It's 120 VAC. It's not gonna hurt you unless you're standing in a puddle of water and have floors made of copper. I've electrocuted myself with 120 mains at least ten times and I'm totally fine. Totally.

An optimist might say it’s a grand achievement that we can do such a thing in safety. Sure it’s loud, but every modern car isolates that noise from all passengers so it’s more than tolerable. Sure they’re fast, but with our roads and a relatively small and loose set of rules that we all mostly follow, it’s a relatively safe thing to do. Enough that the convenience of doing so far outweighs the danger and expense.

Most people can drive 100km/hr safely without thinking about it, what an age. 130 years ago, 92.78 km/hr was the land-speed record - no human had ever piloted a vehicle faster. And now we all do it!
